Areas of Research, Teaching, And Clinical Expertise and Scholarship
Since 1984, Dr. Rounds has been involved in teaching in and developing nurse practitioner programs. She was instrumental in developing the gerontological nurse practitioner program in 1985 which in 1998 became a fully online program, the first in the School of Nursing and one of the first in the country. For 13 years she served as the director for all of the primary care nurse practitioner programs at UTMB. She has been involved in the development of UTMB's Doctor of Nursing Practice program and serves as the director of the program. She has been a frequent curriculum consultant for NP programs in the U.S. and also worked with schools in England to develop the NP role and master's degree programs in the U.K. Throughout this time she received numerous federal grants to support development of nurse practitioner programs, distance learning, and online continuing education. Dr. Rounds' research interest is in the area of outcomes of web-based education and other innovative teaching methodologies.
Selected Accomplishments
Dr. Rounds is a Fellow in the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners and the American Academy of Nursing and currently holds the Betty Lee Evans Distinguished Professorship in Nursing. She served as the advanced practice nursing representative to the Texas Board of Nursing for 12 years and served as President of the Board for 11 years. Dr. Rounds is a member of the UTMB Academy of Master Teachers and in 2008 she received their Lifetime Achievement Award. She is also an inaugural member of the UT System Academy of Health Science Educators.
