Approximately two decades ago, a former faculty member of the School of Nursing thought of a fun, innovative way to raise money for student scholarships. As a result, an annual Golf Tournament was fashioned.
The Salute to Nursing event has become one of the most popular events on campus and throughout the Galveston community. The tournament and auction party has become the School’s largest fund raising event with all proceeds benefiting nursing scholarships. This event has raised over $1.2 million towards student scholarships over the years.
As you know, there are daily reports of the critical shortage of nursing professionals and of nursing-to-patient ratios in our hospitals, emergency rooms, and clinics across our nation. UTMB’s School of Nursing is dedicated to educating students and to fulfill these needs by significantly increasing student enrollment.
The scholarship funds are used mostly for the School of Nursing BACC2 students. These accelerated students are in intensive classes for 12 months and are unable to work during this time. Through giving them scholarships at the beginning of their studies, the School is able to help them concentrate on their education rather than financial concerns.
The proceeds from this tournament provide financial assistance to nursing students at the University of Texas Medical Branch School of Nursing. By participating in the Salute to Nursing, you make a difference not only to the students but also to the patients they will one day serve. Your investment in nursing education is an investment in the future of health care.
